Successful 5th Global feed and food congress

Around 900 international delegates attended the 5th Global feed and food congress (GFFC), held last week in Antalya, Turkey. Sustainability in the feed chain was one of the major topics.

The congress was officially opened by Mehmet Danis, Deputy Minister for Agriculture of the Republic of Turkey. In his opening remarks, Minister Danis underlined the importance of the agricultural sector both for Turkey and for the whole world, as a vital part of the economy as well as of society. He added that the 5th Global Feed & Food Congress with the theme ‘Equity and Prosperity for all’ is a strong effort to explore key topics that will drive a more equitable production and distribution of food around the world.

Strive for harmonisation

Mr Ruud Tijssens, FEFAC President, told GFFC delegates “to face the challenges in our ever changing world, the feed and food industry should strive for sustainable development, unlocking the potential in different countries and to strive for harmonization. But the latter we have to do in a practical manner, taking the political realities in the world as a starting point. We should explore strategies that do not oppose the political reality, but that work as practical as possible and which are achievable.”

International Feed Regulators Meeting

At the 9th annual International Feed Regulators Meeting (IFRM), held during the congress Daniela Battaglia, Livestock Development Officer at the Animal Production and Health Division of the FAO said: “Feed operators can valuably contribute to make the livestock and food sectors more responsible and sustainable and to achieve other important goals such as food security, public health, and animal health and welfare. The IFRM is an important opportunity to exchange ideas among stakeholders from around the world and to coordinate our efforts towards common goals.”

Global feed leaders

Also at the global leaders forum, sustainability was further discussed. High level panellists Knut Nesse, CEO of Nutreco, Hubert de Roquefeuil, Chairman of InVivo NSA, Dr Marcos Jank, Vice President Corporate Affairs and Business Development at BRF and Durmuş Yılmaz, former Governor of the Central Bank of Turkey discussed the current state of the feed and food industries, as well as the most important challenges that lie ahead to deliver on the 5th GFFC theme ‘Equity and Prosperity for All’. There was a call for better communication to a wider audience and agreement that working together is key to meet future challenges.

The 5th Global Feed & Food Congress (GFFC) was organised by the International Feed Industry Federation (IFIF) in cooperation with the European Feed Manufacturers’ Federation (FEFAC) and hosted by the Turkish Feed Manufacturers’ Association (TÜRKİYEM-BİR), with technical support provided by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
