Jan Dijkstra at Wageningen UR receives AFIA Award

The American Dairy Science Association (ADSA) announced Jan Dijkstra (Animal Nutrition Group, Wageningen University) as the 2015 recipient of the American Feed Industry Association Award.

The award will be presented on Tuesday, July 14, 2015, during the awards ceremony at the ADSA annual meeting in Orlando, Florida.

The American Feed Industry Association Award was created to promote research in dairy cattle nutrition. The award recognises an individual who has made a worthy contribution to research of dairy cattle nutrition within the 10 years immediately prior to the year of the award. The winner must have had original research work published; conducted research at a public institution, hospital, or similar institution; and been a member of the American Dairy Science Association for at least five successive years.

Leader in research on energy and nutrient utilisation in dairy cattle

In their press release ADSA substantiates that Jan Dijkstra is internationally recognised as a leader in research on energy and nutrient utilisation in dairy cattle: “He has focused particularly on, and has shown the importance of, the interplay between mathematical modeling and experimental research. The contributions of Jan Dijkstra and coworkers have led to improvements in nitrogen use efficiency and to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from cattle, particularly methane. The models he has developed have helped improve understanding and enhance prediction of several nutritional processes, including fermentation in the rumen and milk production in the mammary gland.”
Jan Dijkstra has authored or coauthored more than 175 papers in peer‐reviewed journals and has coedited three books. He is associate professor at the Animal Nutrition Group of Wageningen University and adjunct professor at the Department of Animal and Poultry Science of the University of Guelph (Canada).
