FDA recalls special Kitty-brand dry cat food

30-10-2008 | |

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced the recall of Special Kitty-brand gourmet blend dry cat food due to potential salmonella contamination.

The FDA said Mars Petcare US Inc. initiated the
voluntary recall of the cat food that’s sold at Wal-Mart stores in Connecticut,
Delaware, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New
Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, Vermont, and West
Virginia.

Pets with salmonella infections may be lethargic and have
diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only
decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. The FDA warned animals can be
carriers with no visible symptoms and potentially infect other animals or
humans.

The recalled “Special Kitty Gourmet Blend Dry Cat Food” was sold
in 3.5 pound, 7 pound and 18 pound bags with a “Best If Used By” date of “AUG 11
09.” The production lot codes of the recalled bags begin with the digits “50” in
the second line. The recalled product’s UPC codes — 81131 17546, 81131 17547
and 81131 17548 — can be found directly under the bar code.

Pet owners
with questions about the recall can contact the company at 877-568-4463 or visit
