GMO soy for animal feed discussed at ProTerra conference

A list of renowned speakers have been announced for the upcoming third international sustainability conference, held in Hamburg on October 15.

Belinda Howell from the Retailers’ Soy Group, a group of 10 retailers including Ahold, Asda, Co-op Switzerland, Co-op UK, Delhaize, Migros, Sainsburys, Tesco, Waitrose and Marks & Spencer which sets the minimum standards for responsible soy and Dr Ludger Breloh from German retailer REWE will be speaking at the conference, organized by the ProTerra Foundation Conference.

Dr Breloh will be focussing on why German retailers require non-GMO feed –challenging the decision made earlier this year by the German poultry sector to revert to GM feed – and the potential impact that this could have on the pig industry.

‘Creating Value Supply Chains’ is ProTerra’s third international conference and is being held in Hamburg on 15 October 2014, prior to the 54th European Commodity Exchange. Delegates from across the agricultural value chain – farmers,  producers, traders, manufacturers and retailers, will be able to learn about the practical solutions available for production and sourcing of sustainably produced, fully traceable, non-genetically modified agricultural commodities as well as being able to find out more about ways to improve and upscale existing good practices.

With approximately 75% of the soy produced worldwide being used for animal feed, and with demand for animal-based food expected to rise, pressures on the ecosystem are expected to spiral.  The 2014 ProTerra Foundation Conference will look at the scale of the social and environmental challenges faced by a growing world population and the rising demand for food and feed.

Other speakers at the conference include Dr Sibyl Anwander, former head of Sustainability and Public Affairs at Co-op Switzerland and now Executive Director of the ProTerra Foundation, Sandra Mulder from WWF Netherlands, Tony Bruggink from IDH, The Sustainable Trade Initiative, Dr Daniel Nepstad, Executive Director of the Earth innovation Institute and Prof Christel Cederberg from the Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg.

The 2014 ProTerra Conference will be held at the Privathotel Lindtner, Hamburg on Wednesday 15th October 2014. For more information visit www.proterrafoundation.com
