Ethoxyquin registration in feed materials at risk in Europe?

Since suspension of ethoxyquin could be decided in the near future, Kemin provides options for the different needs of European feed manufacturers.

In its scientific opinion published in November 2015, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) questioned the safety and efficacy of ethoxyquin as additive in animal feed. Since then, this subject was included several times in the agenda of Animal Nutrition Section of the Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed (SCoPAFF) meetings. In September 2016 a draft regulation was published suggesting the intention of suspending ethoxyquin authorization as feed additive. The possible suspension of ethoxyquin forces animal feed players to look for efficient antioxidants alternative to the ethoxyquin-based ones.

Antioxidants represent the main actives for preserving the quality of feed ingredients such fats and oils. Lipids are vital nutrients as they provide a significant level of gross energy, as well as essential dietary fatty acids. But they are highly susceptible to oxidative degradation and antioxidants play a key role in preserving the lipid quality of feed and their ingredients. What solutions are available?

The most efficient way to prevent oxidation of fats and oils is to combine different antioxidant ingredients, with proven efficacy, to control different parts of the oxidation cycle. Kemin liquid antioxidants efficacy

The efficacy of different dosages of Paradigmox White Liquid to improve the oxidative stability of rapeseed oil was recently tested. The set up included a pure Ethoxyquin treatment and BaroxTM Plus Liquid, and antioxidant containing ethoxyquin. Results show a minimal effect of pure ethoxyquin, demonstrating once again that better stabilization is obtained when combining different antioxidants. Both Kemin products showed a clear dose response, with the best performance from Paradigmox White liquid.

Kemin Dry antioxidants efficacy

The efficacy of a dry formula without ethoxyquin was evaluated using the OXITEST. A simple feed made of 95% of ground wheat plus 5% of linseed oil was prepared in our laboratory including the dry antioxidants. The OXITEST results showed a positive effect of both Kemin dry antioxidants, ENDOX® D dry and Paradigmox White DN Dry. At the same time no significant differences between the two treatments were registered, showing Paradigmox White DN Dry at 100 ppm is a valid alternative to ethoxyquin-based product to stabilize feeds.
