Bulgaria’s grain producers on strike

Bulgarian grain farmers in the region of Dobrudzha go on strike today. They demand financial support from the state.

The producers will use their tractors to block roads
to the northern town of Dobrich on Thursday and Friday, strike leaders told
reporters. The protesters call for BGN 147 M grain subsidy to be included in the
2008 budget that passed at first reading last week.

“Bulgaria is the
only country in the European Union that does not provide financial support to
grain producers,” Kiril Jendov, chair of the National Grain Producers
Association said. According to farmers, the agriculture policy of the government
dooms them to bankruptcy.
