The Office of Gene Technology has given approval for Australia's first
trial of GM wheat. Up to 30 varieties will be grown at Horsham and Mildura next
season and will include drought resistant strains.
Jim Peacock, Australia's Chief Scientist, said "There
is no question that GM technologies are going to be important in the future
improvement of wheat, and we need to keep improving the performance of our
varieties under a range of conditions if we are going to remain competitive."
Greenpeace have said there was no need to develop GM crops as non-GM drought
resistant crops were already being developed.
