“Dioxins not an EU matter”

19-01-2011 | |

The European Union’s ‘obsession’ with biofuels has been blamed for the recent discovery of dioxin in animal feed produced in Germany, but would not need extra EU regulation.

Speaking during a European Parliamentary debate, East of England MEP Stuart Agnew said: “The dioxin contamination appears to be because of the failure to adhere to the more rigorous processing standards needed for animal feed as opposed to the less demanding process used for converting rape seed to biofuel.

“The EU’s enthusiasm for biofuels can therefore have unintended consequences.”

He said the Germans had ‘identified a problem, informed people about it and were taking the necessary steps’.  “In my view, this is not a matter for the EU. It will not be solved by, and certainly doesn’t need, extra regulation.”
