Shifts in feed ingredient use in EU

The EU-28 compound feed companies consumed less feed cereals, less pulses, a little more fats and oils and a little more oilcakes and meals.

This is stated in the 2014 statistical yearbook of Fefac, the European Feed Manufacturers Organisation. The feed ingredient that is used the most in the EU-28 is feed cereals, followed by oilcakes and meal and byproducts.

Over the last 5 years, some shifts in consumption per ingredient is seen. A little more oils and fats, oilcakes and meal, dried forage and minerals, additives and vitamins were used in 2014, compared to 2013. The consumption of feed cereals, pulses and animal meals saw a decrease in 2014.

The EU still needs to import most of the protein rich feed ingredients, as the self-sufficiency for most ingredients is below 100% (2012/2013 figures). Only for dried forage the EU produces enough to meet their own demand. Self-sufficiency is here 106%.
