Probiotics in aquaculture
30 oct 2006
Most probiotics proposed as biological control agents in
aquaculture belong to the lactic acid bacteria (LAB).
Probiotic bacteria
in aquaculture are now primarly used to improve water quality by balancing
bacterial population in water and reducing pathogenic bacterial load.
Although the beneficial effects of probiotics in human, pig, cattle and
poultry nutrition has been well documented, the use of such probiotics in
aquaculture is a relatively new concept. However, the number of research is
increasing to better select probiotic strains for application in aquaculture.
