Raw materials of marine origin are still widely employed in fish feeds. One
of the major challenges in fish nutrition is to ensure their successful
replacement.
INRA researchers in France for example
have shown in the rainbow trout that it is possible to totally replace fish oil
by a mixture of vegetable oils without there being any major effects on
development and lipid metabolism.
They have also shown in the gilthead sea bream that with an
adequate intake of essential amino acids, a 75% replacement of fish meal by
plant proteins can be envisaged.
