Harrij Schmeitz obtained his BSc Degree on Horticulture at the Agricultural
College of ‘s-Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands. At that time agriculture in
general was a business of relatively small family owned farms and local
cooperatives with relatively low level of automation. In his last year of study
(1985) the first computer arrived at the college. This triggered
him.
Immediately he saw the advantages of the use of
computers in agriculture. After his study he started working in Computers &
Information technology in Agriculture, for companies and feed/food chains. He
worked on projects like IKZ (Integrated Chain Care, vegetables, Rijk Zwaan), MPS
(Environmental Project Floriculture, Dutch Flower Chain), VIP (Virtual
Integration of the Poultry Chain, De Heus) and Magi-Con (Saweco).
Since 2003 Harrij works at Imtech, a large international technology provider
(
www.imtech.eu). Here he is active in
Imtech’s Food & Feed Competence Centre (
www.foodandfeed.nl). In addition to his
work as a specialist on chain-information-management he is following trends and
innovations in technology and their effects on agri- & food-chains. In his
weblogs he will share with us his view on the development of agri &
food-chains.
