Dumped whey kills 50,000 aquatic animals

An estimated 1,500 to 2,000 gallons of whey spilled into Alum Creek, Ohio, USA killed 40,000 to 50,000 fish and other aquatic animals, according to a wildlife investigator.

The whey, a dairy products, dissolved oxygen in the water which killed fish and at least 3,000 crawfish, according to investigators. Most of the 50,000 animals were minnows. Other species of fish that were killed include catfish, blue gill, bass and carp.

Investigators are not finding any more dead fish and it is believed the waterway will recover.
