Zimbabwe imports 200,000 tons maize

// 25 jul 2007

Zimbabwe imports 200,000 tons of maize from Tanzania to fill up food supplies. The country also tries to import the same amount of maize from Malawi.

The World Food Programme (WFP) and the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) stated that serious shortages lure as a result of poor harvests in Zimbabwe. At least one out of every three persons in the country depends on food aid from abroad.

Malfunctioning
Earlier this year, 400 tons maize was already imported from Zambia and Malawi. As of 2001, Zimbabwe is not able to feed their people with their own stocks. It is said that this is caused by malfunctioning of the current president Robert Mugabe. He chased away white farmers from their farms to replace them with inexperienced black farmers. This has lead to multiple failed harvests.
