Grains for dairy cattle studied in Australia

More and more dairy farmers are turning to grain-based diets for their herds. Last year the Australian industry spent more than AUS$500 million on feed grain.

Researcher Ray King says they are trying to find out how much grain is needed in a cow's diet to increase milk. "As water availability becomes scarce and if pasture's limiting then to maintain milk production we have to go to other supplements, particularly concentrates and feed grains," he said.

"One of the key questions we're trying to answer, whether feeding extra grain concentrates profitability."
