Higher grain harvest in Czech Republic

// 20 aug 2008

Czech grain harvest is estimated by the Agricultural Chamber to rise by 1.1 million tonnes to 7.5 million tonnes this year.

The Chamber's data are in harmony with the data which the Agriculture Ministry published on Monday but are higher than the Czech Statistical Office (CSU) latest estimates. At the beginning of August, the CSU put this year's harvest at 6.82 million tonnes.

Almost 90 percent of the basic cereals, namely winter wheat and spring barley, have been harvested until now. As for rape seed, the harvest is over. Farmers have harvested 1.05 million tonnes of rape seeds, against last year's 1.03 million tonnes. Yield, however, decreased to 2.95 tonnes per hectare from last year's 3.06 tonnes per hectare. The area planted with rape seed grew by 5.6 percent to 367,000 hectares this year.
