Cattle feeding, marketing course offered

Cattle feeders can keep abreast of industry changes to enhance their management and marketing practices by attending the 2007 Great Lakes Professional Cattle Feeding and Marketing Short Course on Jan. 22 and Feb. 5.

The course starts at 18.00 hrs at the DeKalb County Farm Bureau Building. During the first session on Monday, Jan. 22, Terry Mader from the University of Nebraska will discuss feedlot designs, construction costs and impacts on animal performance.

Chris Richards from Oklahoma State University will present information on feeding strategies as it relates to higher corn prices.

Steven Rust of Michigan State University will answer feeding questions and Mark McCully from Certified Angus Beef will talk about factors that are adversely affecting marbling, and ultimately USDA Quality Grades.

In the second session on Feb. 5, Jim Hilker from MSU will talk about corn and cattle prices. And Cimeron Frost from the Illinois Beef Association will give an update on the National ID program.

Glynn Tonsor from Michigan State University will present marketing strategies, and Clifton Williams from Land O’Lakes Purina Feed will talk about characteristics of successful feedlots.
