Vietnam sets melamine threshold

// 02 dec 2008

Vietnam has set its acceptable concentration of melamine in animal feed up to 2.5mg/kg, equivalent to the standard in the US, Canada and the European Union, according to a decision of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).

In a decision released on November 28, the MARD stipulated that the acceptable melamine quantity in animal feeds is not more than 2.5mg per kilo.

The decision was made after the Animal Feed Consultative Council (gathering experts from the Animal Husbandry Agency, the Aquaculture Agency, and the Ministry of Health) carefully researched regulations of the US, Canada, the EU, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.

Chief of the Animal Husbandry Agency, Hoang Kim Giao, said in principle, Vietnam doesn’t accept melamine in animal feed but the threshold of 2.5mg is equivalent to zero. Previously the agency asked traders to not import and buy animal feeds and materials that contain melamine. For human food, Vietnam does not accept melamine.

I disagree, it just depends on farm management.
I don’t know, it depends on the type of farm and country.
