The choice of a protein source for broilers and layers involves many
elements. S.V. Rama Rao, D. Nagalakshmi and M.V.L.N. Raju present data
from their studies which show that although sunflower meal is a good
substitute for soybean meal, ultimately, the deciding factor is cost.
Back in 1973 Cranswick plc started life
producing basic feeds for East Yorkshire pig
farms. Today, Cranswick is a leading UK stock market quoted company with
a turnover of £318 million. Recently the company built a brand new bird food
plant in East Yorkshire
When it comes to uniformity of activity,
legumes are particularly well suited to the use of exogenous enzymes. Economic
feasibility relies on making sure we are fully aware of the nutrients involved
and not wasting expensive additives on functions that the animal or bird can
handle without help.
The quality
of dietary lipids is affected by their degree of saturation and the content of
free fatty acids, among other factors. Adding emulsifiers has already been
shown to improve productive parameters in broilers. Recent work shows that the
efficacy of a lipid emulsifier is affected by lipid quality, but can increase
the metabolisable energy value of lipids by more than the sum of lipid plus
emulsifier alone.
Fishmeal is a popular protein source across
most of the world. However, in many countries, its cost is prohibitive.
Researchers have discovered a potential alternative protein source in the paddy
fields and waterways of India,
namely water snails.
Improving feed quality for the benefit of
the poultry farmer can be a demanding task, especially where even small
improvements in performance are difficult to achieve. Going back to the basics
of starch digestion shows how improvements in our relationship with one of the
more familiar feed components can improve growth and health.
Emulsifiers. Nothing new, many will say.
And indeed their use has long been practiced in our industry. Although their main
use was to improve fat solubility in aqueous media, farmers using them were
found to be adding more than was recommended- and getting better performance.
Research has since confirmed what these farmers knew all along.
The
Flockman system of supplying nutrients on a day-to-day basis now feeds 15% of
all UK
broilers. But David Filmer is not resting on his laurels. He aims for a fully
automated, practical feeding model and is drawing from jungle fowl behaviour
and pre-intensification know-how as his inspiration.
What is the unique property of fishmeal
that makes it so useful in enhancing animal performance? Scientists in the UK have
uncovered some of the secrets of this unique high performance protein. Using
their research they have developed treatments for vegetable proteins to get the
best feed value out of plant proteins.
The Animal Sciences Group of Wageningen University published a new
report: Effect of dietary energy and NSP concentration and particle size of NSP
on eating behaviour, feather pecking behaviour and performance of laying
hens.
