In mycotoxin analysis, well established methods
based on chromatographic principles are holding their ground, but a transition
to multitoxin and rapid methods can be observed. Also, a number of new
techniques such as biosensors are rapidly emerging say Rudolf Krska and Elvira
Welzig.
A major task of a producer is to manage the
logistics of a large number of commodity flows. Raw materials are delivered in
different quantities and batch sizes. A feed mill with an annual output of
100,000 t will realistically have about 500 incoming batches of sizes ranging
from 5 to 1,000 t per month. Correct sampling is of utmost importance to obtain
the desired quality standard.
Plant-based
ingredients are increasingly used in fish diets due to increase economic/market
pressures on feed compounders to produce lower cost, sustainable alternatives.
Because plant ingredients pose a high risk of mycotoxin contamination, moving
to plant protein sources in the aquafeed industry demands careful risk
assessment, as well as appropriate protection strategies for fish fed
contaminated feeds.
Brazil's
powerful soya crushing industry is one of the strongest supporters of the
government's plan to add 10% vegetable oil to the 37 million tonnes of diesel
fuel used by the country's truck and bus fleets.
Conditions in corn fields across the region High Plains were right this year
to produce a deadly toxin already responsible for the death of two horses in the
Panhandle, USA said a Texas Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory official in

As long as
grains are grown the fungi of the fusarium family lie in ambush to attack the
kernels when conditions are right and there is very little a farmer can do to
prevent fusarium infection. But now modern genetic research shows promising
results in altering the plants defence system to repel a fungal attack.
Following the discovery that some 1.8 tonnes of genetically
engineered (GE) corn have been imported into New Zealand, Greenpeace said that
all GE contaminated corn must be pulled up and destroyed.
According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency,
10,000 cattle in Ontario and Quebec have consumed feed, used on 113 farms,
containing traces of animal byproducts.
The Federation of the Belgium Chemical Industries (Fedichem), the Federation
for the Food industry (Fevia) and the cooperative of the Belgium feed producers
(Bemefa) have developed a code of conduct regarding the use of chemicals in food
and feed. This code was established in close cooperation with the Belgium Food
Agency (FAVV).
