So far the US has been relying on the use of
antibiotics in sow diets to maximise lactation performance. However US research
institutes looking to the future (no antibiotic growth promoters) are investing
in research to find safer and more sustainable dietary solution for modern
lactating sow nutrition.
Flax is grown for its seed and fibre. It is
one of the oldest textile fibres. There is evidence that it was grown and used
in the prehistoric lake dwellings of Switzerland. Fine linen fabrics
made from flax have also been discovered in ancient Egyptian tombs. Later it
was found that the seed and its oil had important health benefits.
According to doctoral research conducted by Turid Synnøve Aas of Akvaforsk,
bacterial protein meal (BPM) shows great potential as a raw ingredient in fish
feed. Its characteristics can make us less reliant on fish meal in the
production of feed for the aquaculture industry.
One input that growers have always felt was a barrier to the expansion of
the freshwater crayfish industry in Australia has been the ready
availability of an efficient diet at a competitive price. After several years of
trials on their own farms, John Harsant and Ken Wright have developed a ration
they believe will remove this obstacle.
The
potential for growth in the Australian aquaculture industry is undisputed. Some
say that it is a predominantly production orientated industry, focused on a
species' capacity to be cultivated rather than the markets' demand for the
product. This approach is slowly changing in some areas of the industry, and
the market-focussed enterprises are likely to prosper and grow.
Abalone is seen as
the new boon industry in the aquaculture pantheon. With the animal's high value
and the breakthroughs in diets, breeding technology and husbandry methods have
made it the investors' darling.
The government of Vietnam has approved large-scale trials of the
immuno-stimulant Shrimp IMS, a new feed additive for shrimps to protect against
a range of diseases.
The conference Aquafeed Horizons Asia, organised at
the Victam Asia in Bangkok, March 6 provided a great update on the current
issues in aqua feed ingredients and processing. The conference was organised by

attracted around 160 attendants.
