Since its introduction the use of big-bags
or Flexible Intermediate Bulk Containers (FIBC) has soared. Flexibility, tailor
made design, speed, hygiene and ergonomic operation are the latest trends in
modern big bag filling systems.
In many countries feed is transported in
bulk. However, in areas where logistics are a bottleneck or farms are
relatively small much feed is still transported in bags. 'Small' products or
single feed ingredients are also often transported in bags. So there is quite
an industry involved in this sector, and this industry in evolving quickly.

Lancashire in the UKthink that
their Spiroflow Bulk Bag Discharger is “wicked” – which, roughly translated,
means that they are delighted with the way it performs.
When bagging products one has to be sure that the bags are securely
closed. At Dutch young animal feed specialist Nutrifeed an acoustic sensor
immediately warns the operator if a bag is leaking.

Packaging animal feed
has always been a challenge. Jörg Rosegger of Austrian packaging specialist
Binder+Co describes in a case study for high-speed bagging of animal feed why the
main challenges lie in handling different products and bag sizes, and packaging
sticky products.
From January to November 2006, United States exports
of packaging machinery increased 7% compared to the same period of 2005
totalling U.S. $783 million. U.S. imports of packaging machinery increased 6%.
Horizontal form, fill, seal (FFS) machinery
manufacturer Bossar says a new petfood filling machine currently nearing
completion at its Barcelona factory can package dry dog, cat and rabbit food
into 50 - 1,500g capacity pre-made pouches with zippers.
Nutec Ltd., a contract manufacturer and packager of animal feed and medicinal
products in Ireland converted from manual dumping of 20 kg bags of raw material
to automated, dust-free discharging of 1 metric ton bulk bags using a bulk bag
weigh batch discharger.
In the competitive pet food segment, packaging adds value not just by

an important part in the purchasing decision, while easy-opening features are
good for customer loyalty.
