Increasing the surface area of raw materials increases the amount of materials exposed to the animal’s digestive system, thus leading to a more complete digestion. A larger surface area can be obtained by grinding the materials. Hammer mills are the most commonly used, but the roller mill is gaining ground when energy consumption is a limiting factor.
