Harrij Schmeitz
In December 2011 Harrij became the Managing Director for the Open Innovationcenter Feed Design Lab (www.feeddesignlab.eu). Here he works on Open Innovation in Feed & Feedtechnology.
Harrij Schmeitz: “When I made the first sketches in 2009 for a new testing facility for the development of sustainable animal feeds and new technologies for the animal feed industry making use of co-products and by-products from horticulture, I never believed that at the end of 2011 I would be challenged to actually shape the project. It is an enormous challenge in which I can utilise my experience and knowledge of animal protein chains, feed production, technology in the industry and also horticulture as an important supplier of raw materials.”
In his weblogs he will share with us his views on the re-design of the feed-industry in perspective of the protein-chain.

The challenge of the protein chain...
When I wrote my first blog for All About Feed on the development of the feed-supply-chain it was about John, a feed designer . Now, almost three years later I am starting a new series of blogs on all aspects of feed-design.
“From waste to VALUE…”
Twentysix years ago I left the University of Applied Sciences for Horticulture in ‘s-Hertogenbosch and was expert in calculating how much natural gas a grower needs to grow his tomatoes. Today growers in Holland are introducing themselves as: “Hello, I’m Janssen , producer of electricity. Oh, by the way, I also produce glasshouse tomatoes”. And it’s true.
“Out of the chain thinking…”
Just before the summer holidays it’s a good time to make a wrap up of all that has happened this year. And that was a lot. Too much to give a complete overview.
“They are crazy in those offices…”
There is a “new way of working” becoming more and more popular with General and Human Resource Management in companies. The concept is simple; employees increasingly want to have the freedom to work were they want, when they want and how they want. And human resource managers are giving in to their demands; otherwise they risk losing good staff or being unable to recruit new staff.
French farmers: In control of whole production chain
The summer holidays are over and I have left the great region Gers en Gasconge in France - a region that plays an important role in French agricultural production of cattle, corn, sunflowers but especially Foie Gras.
“Can that satellite look into your barn…”
Reading the weekly update of Allaboutfeed, an article about the EU Harvest 2010 caught my attention.
“Can that satellite look into your barn?”
Well, not yet, but almost. Reading the weekly update of AllAboutFeed my attention was drawn by the article about the EU Harvest 2010 (News 22 Jan). Analists are forecasting the yield of corn, wheat etc….of huge interest for the feed-industry.
Towards the GREEN feedmill
As the animal feed industry is recovering from the latest financial crisis, the question arises what will be the next challenge that will hit us? With the Copenhagen Climate Summit coming up, discussions on C02 emission and sustainability are booming and make clear that these are the next challenges to face, for every sector.
It is all about how technology is used in the industry
The award winning innovation of FastFocus SensOren (SensEars in English) gained a lot of publicity in the Netherlands this month. G. Griffioen of the company AGIS received the prize for the best Small Business Innovation with his sensor for in the ear of a cow and this is not his first award with this innovation. In this weblog I want to ellaborate a bit more on this novelty, not in a commercial way but to explain why this "out-of-the-box" concept of this innovation made it such a success.
“The difference between a feed mill and a Skoda….”
May be you think “Harrij is getting crazy?” You may be right. But I want to discuss with you this issue. When you have a look at an average feed mill and compare this with a Skoda (or any other modern car) I see a lot of differences.
