L-Threonine price high and stable

This week’s feed additive update takes a look at the latest price changes in L-Threonine 98.5% and poultry by product Meal, pet food grade.

Increased cost of shipping coupled with the ever increasing cost of corn feed stock has led to increased demand amid tightening supply, pushing prices of L-Threonine upward. Supply has been slow to arrive where demand is highest. The current global price is high and stable, with strong European and American market prices.

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a recall of a pet food product called Sportmix manufactured by Midwestern Pet Foods because it is believed to contain potentially fatal levels of aflatoxin. This recall follows the death of at least 28 dogs. Aflatoxin is produced by the mould Aspergillus flavus which can grow on corn and other grains used in pet food.

The unfortunate incident highlights the need for pet food grade products to be certified to ensure safety standards are met, adding a premium to the market price. The higher market price of pet food grade poultry by product, as opposed to animal feed grade, reflects exactly this premium.
