In the 9th 2020 edition of All About Feed, we travel to the Netherlands to visit a 40m-high tower containing a line which is subject to a controlled heating treatment to kill unwanted organisms. All About Feed also counts down to 2022 when new regulations will come into force that will ban the use of pharmaceutical levels of zinc in the EU. What challenges do these restrictions pose for pig producers striving to support herd health and productivity?

Probiotics for tougher plants

Ancestral varieties of modern corn and wheat might be the key to non-chemical mycotoxin prevention. In this article, Canadian researchers combine modern tech with ancient organisms to find solutions to mycotoxin-producing fungus.

Silage production: human safety issues

Numerous risk factors are associated with silage-making, which may potentially cause serious injuries. In this article we review the major risk factors and ways in which they can be avoided.

Protecting workers from hazardous minerals

In the EU, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) evaluates the safety of additives before they can be authorised for use in animal feeds. The safety of workers is becoming a crucial consideration.

Feed safety and shelf life: 5 questions put to a scientist

Trouw Nutrition has developed a patent-pending activated propionic acid technology to help producers remain competitive in their markets while producing feed with an optimal moisture content and high nutritional value. All About Feed spoke to global product manager, Dr Prince Nanda, to discuss the science that underlies its efficacy.

ISO/TC 293 feed machinery: international standards for feed equipment

Standards are the international language of business. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) develops and publishes international standards and uses global expert input to produce these standards. This article gives an overview of the ISO/TC 293 standards for feed machinery, and an update on which standards are currently under development.

The pelleting process: factors influencing phytase recovery

When evaluating the heat stability of a phytase, there are many factors that need to be considered during the pelleting process when the feed mixture is heated.

Conditioning temperature and time, moisture content of the mash feed, diameter and length of the die, and feed composition are all factors that significantly affect enzyme activity in the feed pellet. Photo: Domnitsky

Thermal treatment eliminates pathogens in poultry meal

ForFarmers has built a 40m-high tower containing a line which is subject to a controlled heating treatment to kill unwanted organisms. The feed is heated with steam according to very precise specifications.

Steam-based heating is uniform and quick, making it easy to regulate the temperature, says production manager, Roy Ottenschot. Photo: ForFarmers

The hidden threat of mycotoxins in aquaculture

Mycotoxins in aquaculture and fish feed is an emerging and underestimated problem for the industry as higher levels of cereals have become more commonplace in aquafeeds.

To our knowledge, maize and its by-products are the most highly contaminated with mycotoxins, followed by wheat and soybean. Photo: Alltech

Even low levels of mycotoxins impact broiler performance

New research has shown that even low levels of naturally occurring toxic substances, such as mycotoxins, found in animal feed have a negative impact on the performance and health of broilers.

“Even though levels of mycotoxins were low, the mixture of those presen… had a profoundly negative impact on bird health and performance,” says Oluwatobi Kolawole, lead researcher. Photo: Chris Mccullough

Covid-19 and ASF affect Philippines grain imports

The Philippines’ pig and chicken sectors have been severely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic as well as the African Swine Fever outbreak. A reduced demand for feed has meant fewer imports of wheat and corn.

The use of canola meal in pigs, poultry and aquaculture species

Today, canola meal has no palatability issues, and plant breeding, different agronomic practices and improved processing have also greatly boosted consistency of canola meal, which is being increasingly used in pig, poultry and various other species’ diets.

According to the Canola Council of Canada, except for lysine, canola meal provides an amino acid balance that targets a pig’s required amino acid profile better than any other plant protein. Photo: Misset

Standardised ileal digestible lysine requirement for high lean weanling pigs

A new study on the standardised ileal digestible lysine requirement confirms industry recommendations for 7-15kg weanling pigs of the high lean genetic line.

Countdown to 2022: achieving swine production goals without zinc oxide

In January 2022, new regulations will come into force that will ban the use of pharmaceutical levels of zinc in the EU. Why have farms historically relied on zinc oxide, and what innovations could support and even improve swine production without zinc oxide or in-feed antimicrobials.

Live yeast can help manage early rumen development

More than 20% of the variation in milk yield at first lactation can be directly associated with calf growth performance in the first weeks of life. Studies confirm the benefits of live yeast supplementation, showing higher levels of starter intake, improved growth rate and greater homogeneity.

S. cerevisiae CNCM I-1077, an active dry yeast strain, benefits calves by accelerating the rate of establishment of cellulolytic bacteria and ciliate protozoa, both essential for fibre degradation. Rumen wall papillae development is also improved. Photo: Lallemand

Column: Diets containing DON levels like these impair broilers performance

Columnist Dr Regiane Santos, mycotoxins researcher at Schothorst Feed Research, discusses deoxynivalenol (DON) and the negative impact of this mycotoxin in broiler chickens at levels above EU-recommended guidelines (5,000 μg/kg).
