March feed update: What did you miss?

All About Feed wraps up the latest updates and business developments from March to ensure you don’t miss a thing in the global animal feed industry.

Royal De Heus acquires Cerrado Nutrição Animal in Brazil

Royal De Heus has signed the agreement for the acquisition of the Brazilian cattle nutrition company Cerrado Nutrição Animal, located in Itaberaí, state of Goiás. Cerrado Nutrição Animal, with a manufacturing capacity of 50,000 tonnes per year, produces a complete range of dairy and beef products including complete feeds, concentrates, nucleus, mineral supplements and mineral protein supplements. The acquisition of a pig feed company in 2012 was the starting point for the activities of De Heus in Brazil. This was followed by the acquisition of a feed factory in Apucarana, opening the dairy cattle market and the opening of a greenfield factory for the production of an exclusive nutritional supplement called MUB.

Adisseo and Novozymes achieve visualisation of in vivo germination

As a first for the industry, Adisseo and Novozymes have been able to demonstrate and visualise the germination of their Alterion technology, which they say scientifically proves that their probiotic is an effective and consistent solution for poultry. “For the first time ever, scientists have been able to visualise the germinated active cells of a commercial Bacillus-based probiotic inside the gut of birds. The process, known as germination, is crucial to demonstrate the desired benefits of probiotics for animal production,” said Adisseo’s Damien Prévéraud.

Leong Hup International acquires aquaculture feed mill in Vietnam

Leong Hup International Berhad, one of the largest fully integrated producers of poultry, egg and livestock feed in Southeast Asia, has announced it has inked agreements to acquire a feedmill in Vietnam, including its plant, equipment, machineries and motor vehicles. The acquisition represents the regional integrated poultry operator’s diversification into aquatic feed in Vietnam. The asset, which currently produces only aquatic feed, has the capacity to produce up to 118,800 mt of aquatic feed per annum. The Group has plans to enhance the asset’s capacity and begin poultry feed production by the end of 2020.

Tyson Fresh Meats and Jacob Stern & Sons launch JV

Tyson Fresh Meats, the beef and pork subsidiary of Tyson Foods, and Jacob Stern & Sons have launched a joint venture, JST Global, to serve the worldwide fats and oils market. Tyson Fresh Meats currently operates 6 beef plants and 6 pork plants in the US. Jacob Stern & Sons is among Tyson’s largest customers for animal by-products. “We maximise the value of every animal we harvest so that no part of the animal goes to waste,” stated Steve Stouffer, group president, Tyson Fresh Meats.

Olmix and INRAE partner for the promotion of algae

INRAE and Olmix will evaluate the effect of different compounds rich in marine sulfated polysaccharides on a wide range of biological activities able to improve production performance and the resistance of animals to infections. The research performed in vitro and in vivo highlighted that some of the tested extracts could be efficiently used in feeds as natural products to stimulate the immune response of livestock animals, protect the mucous membranes from pathogens and reduce the use of medical products on farms.

AB Vista and partners present 9 swine research papers

AB Vista presented the methodologies and findings from 9 new studies examining the effects of calcium, phosphorous, phytase, xylanase and xylo-oligosaccharides on swine performance at the ASAS Midwest Section/ADSA Midwest Branch Joint Meeting in Nebraska, USA, in March. The research was conducted in conjunction with several independent institutes. Highlights indicated that using a high dose of phytase and xylanase enabled a reduction in formulation cost, improved performance and reduced CO2e emissions from animals fed less dense diets.

Another study, furthered understanding of the mode of action of xylanase as it indicated the enzyme could release fermentable substrates from insoluble fibre, improving the fermentability of corn co-products through the alteration of hemicellulose.

Dr Pete Wilcock, AB Vista’s North America swine manager: “On a global basis, the use of enzymes saves the animal feed industry more than US$8 billion per annum in nutritional input costs and contributes significantly to environmental sustainability.”

Zinpro’s animated video demonstrates unique trace minerals

Zinpro has produced an animated video, Take the Proven Path, to educate the industry about the difference in trace mineral absorption and metabolism. The company believes that its range of performance minerals are more efficiently absorbed and utilised, maximising animal wellness and genetic potential.

Hamlet Protein invests in poultry

Hamlet Protein, now under new management, has started to target the poultry market more actively. With the knowledge acquired in direct interaction with nutritionist and veterinarians worldwide, the company is now bringing its value proposition to a broader group of customers.

Early this month, a group of industry nutritionists and academia were invited to attend a poultry meeting in South Carolina. Sharing the results of recent field trials with HP AviStart in broilers, the team engaged in a direct interaction with producers and scientists to address the various views on nutritional needs of young broilers and the challenges producers face in today’s market.
