West Australian sugar mill closes

18-12-2007 | |

Due to falling world prices and a lack of land for expanding the sugar crop, the only sugar mill in Western Australia has to close.

Ord River Cane Growers who own the mill have made the
decision despite the state government putting in $3.7 million to buy the mill
from its previous owners, Korean company Cheil Jedang, in June this year.

After crushing 388,000 tonnes of cane this season the last shipment of
raw sugar from WA will leave early next year. Options for the plant are being
considered, including ethanol or feedstock production, however these are
unlikely to succeed as they both would require more land being planted than is
available to be economically viable.
