FSIS to determine dioxin levels in poultry

21-08-2007 | |

The US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) will begin conducting its Dioxin 08 survey on 4 September, 2007.

This baseline study, being conducted in
conjunction with the Agricultural Research Service, will aim to determine dioxin
levels in meat and poultry products in the US.

Over a 12-18 month period, 500 fat samples will be
collected from steers, heifers, pigs and young chicken and turkey carcasses from
randomly selected, federally inspected establishments for testing to determine
if dioxin levels are still low across proteins and whether or not steps
should be taken to reduce dioxin
levels.
