Russia could become the world leader in wheat export by 2021 according to forecasts by Dmitry Prikhodko, Economist of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
Speaking at the conference "Grain Forum - 2013" in Odessa on May 23, Prikhodko said that by 2021 the export potential of Russian wheat may reach nearly 25 million tonnes, which will overtake the current leader - the USA.
Prikhodko also spoke aobut Ukraine’s wheat market. He predicts by 2021 Ukraine will supply nearly 14 million tonnes of wheat to foreign markets, keeping it, consistently, in 6th place on the world market.
In making the forecast, the FAO took into account the difficulties which Ukrainian wheat are currently facing on the world market. At the same time, Prikhodko noted good prospects of Ukrainian feed grains.
By 2021 it is possible that Ukraine will become 3rd in the world with regard to feed grain exports. Generally, Ukraine can increase the current volume of grain exports by 70%, he said.
As for the supply of feed grains from Russia and Kazakhstan, by 2021 there may be some decrease of the volume of foreign supplies due to the continuing growth in domestic consumption.
