Premixes in pet food

07-02-2008 | |

The premix business is an essential component of the success and growth of the pet food industry.

The purpose of adding and using supplemental premixes has changed noticeably
over recent years and may well continue to do so in the future.
Specialty products
The
types of premixes that are included in pet food vary widely. The most common
premixes are vitamin and trace mineral blends. Within the last several years,
premixes now include speciality products such as nutraceuticals, extracts,
antioxidants, herbs etc.

Compared to the livestock industry, the pet food sector is
often willing to spend more money on the inclusion of speciality ingredients in
the premixes and blends, which is directly reflected in the costs of those
premixes being significantly higher.
