Pests attack Hungarian wheat crop

Farmers could yet minimise the threat if they respond in time, and recent wet
weather had already brought relief to crops after several dry months, according
to Miklos Toth, an official at the ministry’s MGSZH
agency.

Mildew
“Diseases such as powdery mildew
already appeared in the autumn on grains such as wheat and barley,” he said.
“The winter usually cuts the stock of pests which harm winter crops. That did
not happen this year,” Toth said.
Powdery mildew re-appeared on plants very
early in the spring, he said. “It has not yet had such an impact which could
cause a substantial drop in the harvest,” Toth added.
