Victam Asia: Full package with strong focus on machinery

With three trade shows within this year's Victam Asia, there was even more to see, to touch, to discuss and to learn. The show, which was held 3-5 March in Bangkok, Thailand, had 20% more exhibitors on board this year. Together with the coinciding events, Fiaap and Grapas, Victam pulled off the full package for the international animal feed industry.

General Manager of Victam International, Henk van de Bunt, officially opened the 2010 edition of Victam Asia by cutting the ribbon with colleague André Oosterveld, President of Victam International, and Dr. Kanok Katikarn, advisor to the Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives. Victam Asia is the foremost event within South East Asia for manufacturers and suppliers of technology and equipment used for the production of animal feed, petfood and aquafeed. The event, which is held every two years, saw an increased number of exhibitors at the 2010 show. “This year’s Victam Asia is 20% larger in terms of number of exhibitors and floor space. We are practically sold out," commented Van de Bunt. Oosterveld added that despite the economic downturn, Victam was larger than the 2008 edition, which had been the most successful, until now.

Feed additives
New feed additives or novel applications in animal feed, aquafeed and petfood were shown at Fiaap (Feed Ingredients & Additives Asia Pacific), which was first introduced to the market alongside Victam Asia 2008.
This proved to be very successful, so it was also part of this year's Victam Asia. Companies present at Fiaap were Addcon, Orffa, Aquativ, SPF, Angel Yeast, Vitamex, Special Nutrients, Kemin, and Omega Protein, among many others. Addcon caught much attention for its products Addcon XL and Fishform® Plus. The liquid performance XLerator (Addcon XL) is a strong bactericidal based on formic acid and formaldehyde for use in poultry systems. The product reduces the total microbial load in the drinking water and targets undesirable bacteria such as Salmonella and E. Coli in the digestive tract.
Fishform® Plus is a preservative for raw fish and fish meal based on potassium diformate. The product can be used to preserve Refrigerated Sea Water (RSW) or Refrigerated Fresh Water (RFW) and prevent “rotten” water prior to fishing. A small amount of Fishform® Plus (0.05-0.1 of the water) is added to the RFW at the same time as the tanks are filled. In certain cases the product could be used directly on the fish without extra cooling. “The advantage of preserving the fish without using extra water is that the water soluble components remain in the fish and are not lost with the cooling water. This increases the dry matter content of the fish compared to fish cooled in a RSW system," explained Kurt Wegleitner from Addcon.Kemira recently introduced two new products for the Asia Pacific feed industry. The first is Kemira Mould Control LP3 NC, which is a liquid mould inhibitor for feed and grain preservation. The second is Kemira Pro GIT SB5, which is a solid acidifier for animal performance enhancement. “Extensive trials with Kemira Pro GIT SB5 in diets without antibiotics have been conducted in Europe as well as ‘on top of’ antibiotics in the Asia Pacific region," explained Kemira's Technical Manager Dr. Li Li.

Rice and flower milling
Biomass technology was an expanding new sector within Victam Asia 2010, and companies exhibited their latesttechnology for biomass pelleting, etc. It was the first time that Grapas was organised with Victam Asia. “We wanted to expand the portfolio we offer our visitors. Grapas, focusing on the rice and flower milling, of course has a lot in common with the products that are used in the animal feed industry. The machinery used, such as elevators, are practically the same," said Van de Bunt. This specialist show for the grain industry was a platform for companies worldwide who specialise in the technology for rice and flour milling, industrial noodle production, breakfast cereal, and extruded snack manufacture, and of course grain storage, preservation, transportation and processing. Buhler had a separate stand at the show just for these products, and Ocrim, F.H. Schule, Kemin, Zhenchang, Muyang, Extru-Tech, among others, showed their latest technology and specialist ingredients and preservation for this sector.

Machinery focus
Compared to 2008, there was a larger focus on machinery. This year there was far more equipment on the show floor, including pellet mills, extruders, hammer mills, coolers, mixers, and much more, says Van de Bunt. Visitors could see major companies like Buhler, CPM, Wenger, Triumph, Muyang, Zhengchang, Andritz, Schmidt Seeger etc. “Again, these and other companies have increased the size of their stands to show more of their feed processing technology and systems. Visitors could see a lot of dryers, magnets, conveyor belts, silos, bucket elevators, quality control systems, and formulation programs on display," said Van de Bunt.
One of the software programs that was presented was Grain-Watch® Temperature Surveillance. This is a Swedish product for grain temperature surveillance. The Grain-Watch system is a reliable, digital solution for monitoring the temperature in silo facilities. It is designed for easy installation using rugged, high-quality components. This system uses heavy duty measuring sensor lines made from a rugged steel wire construction and are tested to withstand 5,000 kg. The wires are connected to the roof of the silo or alternatively anchored at the bottom.
Buhler is continuously developing the Asian market, so was obviously also present at Victam. The company operates its own production plants in China and India in addition to established branches in several Asian countries. The company promoted its pellet mill and high speed mixer. “Our pellet mill produces high quality and safe feed pellets. The modular design can be adapted to specific needs and has a capacity up to 30 tonnes per hour. The advanced drive system reduces operating costs by up to 50% compared to gearbox-driven systems," explained Isabel Maganto of Buhler.
