Brazilian maize exports on schedule

10-01-2007 | |

Around one million tonnes of Brazilian maize have already been booked for shipment in 2007 and analysts say that shipments this year could equal the five million tonnes exported in 2004.

Last year Brazilian maize shipments nearly quadrupled to four million tonnes.
Some contracts have already been concluded to ship Brazil’s second ‘safrinha’
corn crop between August and September. The main summer crop starts to be
shipped in March.Iran, which imported 1.77 million tonnes of Brazilian maize in
2006, is again expected to be the main market.

Firm
prices

Firm prices encouraged Brazilian farmers to increase the
‘safrinha’ maize area to 3.7 million hectares, from 3.2 million in 2006, and
favourable crop weather points to a big crop which would help sustain increased
exports. “The ‘safrinha’ maize crop will reach 11.6 million tonnes but could be
greater if the weather is good,” Agencia Rural consultancy said in a
report.
