Aquaculture is a rapidly growing business. Research and new insights are therefore also going fast. Below some interesting facts that you might not know yet.

Did you know.......?




  • That in many parts of Asia, aquariums are considered standard office furniture
  • That the cold and windy port of Rotterdam, the Netherlands is home to a tropical shrimp farm
  • That the number of species under aquaculture production in the world grows larger every year, with the majority of growth in numbers provided by saltwater species
  • That fish feel pain and suffer stress just like mammals and birds
  • That there are over 25,000 identified species of fish on the earth
  • That aquaculture is one of the fastest-growing segments of the U.S. and global agricultural economies
  • That about 75% of farmed shrimp is produced in Asia, in particular in China and Thailand 
  • That farmed Atlantic salmon contains 3-4 times more fat that wild salmon
  • That fish have a specialized sense organ called the lateral line which works much like radar and helps them navigate in dark or murky water
  • That more fish become vegetarian as a result of high fish meal and oil prices
