Multinationals dominate pet food market in Finland

The Pet Food and Pet Care in Finland report offers a comprehensive guide to the size and shape of the market at a national level. It provides the latest retail sales data (2003-2008), allowing you to identify the sectors driving growth.

Dog food reached 33,592 tonnes and €129 million in 2008, with growth of 2% in volume and 5% in current value terms in Finland.
 
Dry dog food grew considerably more than wet food. Sales of premium dog food grew faster than other price categories.
 
Multinationals dominated in both cat and dog food markets with the two biggest players being local subsidiaries: Mars Finland Oy and Nestlé Purina PetCare Finland Oy.
 
Dog food is expected to see a constant value CAGR of a little under 2% over the forecast period to 2013. Cat food value grew by 4% and accumulated sales of just over €120 million in 2008.
 
Cat treats grow fast
As in dog food, cat food mid-priced products were squeezed by economy and premium, both of which grew faster than mid-priced. Cat treats was once again the highest growing category, increasing in value by 8%, mainly due to its low base value. Unit prices rose marginally due to high inflation.
 
Cat food is projected to see a constant value CAGR of just over 1% over the forecast period.
 
Pet care products increased in value by 4% reaching sales of €45 million in 2008.Best Friend Finland Oy was the clear leader in pet care products with a 28% share of value.
