The March edition of All About Feed can now be read online. In this edition we have a strong focus on fish nutrition and we delve into phytogenic products and how they can help in boosting efficiency.

Back in 2014, the French company Ynsect underwent a deep screening on 15 insect species on over 30 parameters, which led to the selection of the mealworm (Tenebrio molitor L.) to be the  first on the animal feed market, as it ranked with the best overall score. In the article on page 24 of this issue, Antoine Hubert from Ynsect explains how this product performed in fish diets.

Changing salmon diets

In the article from Marine Harvest (Page28), the company explains that the most significant challenge facing feed production today lies in the fundamental changes that ingredients are undergoing. With this in mind, the salmon industry is increasingly turning to plant proteins based on soya, wheat and corn, peas and bean concentrates in order to maintain sustainable production levels over the long term. “Salmon feed used to contain as much as 60% fish meal, but now that’s dropped to around 10% and this has a profound impact on the manufacturing process. For example, pellets containing a high level of plant protein have to be extruded using a different process in order to obtain an end product with the desired properties”, according to Marine Harvest.

Phytogenic feed additives

Attaining good gut performance has become increasingly important to livestock producers. Phytogenic feed additives (PFAs) can support good gut performance and improve feed efficiency in broilers through several ways. Battling against anti-nutritional factors is important, as is improving feed digestibility, increasing the gut’s absorption of nutrients and reducing inflammation. Plant-derived feed additives constitute a powerful tool in this regard. Biomin has performed a number of trials with their phytogenic products and showed increased digestibility and gut health in chickens. Read more about this on page 18.
