The effects of mycotoxins in poultry feed depend on the specific mycotoxin or mycotoxins present, the level of contamination and the length of time the animal has been consuming the mycotoxin(s).

Symptoms of mycotoxicosis in poultry include immune depression, lower production and gastro-intestinal disorders.

Mycotoxins are recognised as having a range of negative impacts on protein synthesis and trial work has shown varying problems which can occur, even with a combination of mycotoxins at low levels of contamination, says Christina Schwab from Biomin.

A study, published in the World Mycotoxin Journal found that consumption of ochratoxin A (OTA) contaminated diets by broilers results in economic losses to the poultry industry. The consumption of OTA contaminated diets for example results in negative effects on poultry production, such as decreased body weight gain in kidney problems.
