Sri Lanka considers producing poultry feed for export
Since, for the first time in Sri Lanka’s agricultural history it was able it to export large amounts of maize for poultry feed, it is now looking at the possibility of manufacturing the feed themselves and then exporting it.
According Shahul Hameed, managing director of Wayamba Traders Company, Sri Lanka exported 50,000 metric tonnes of maize, mainly to be used for the manufacture of poultry feed, to Canada, Taiwan and Gulf countries.
He said that with peace and more lands being made available for agriculture, Sri Lanka achieved self sufficiency in maize this year. "The country’s demands is 180,000 mt tonnes per year and during harvesting of the first season the yield is 200, 000 mt tonnes," he said. He added that they are now looking at manufacturing poultry food in Sri Lanka for exporting to these countries.
