Pakistan considers GM labels

22-06-2012 | |

Pakistan is considering following in the footsteps of the European Union by introducing a genetically modified labelling policy.

According to a concept paper “Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) and Food Labelling” the government is considering several options. It has not been decided if the labelling will be compulsory, as in the EU, or voluntary, as in Canada. Costs for the producer is a main concern.

It has been suggested that the move is more about consumer choice than a food safety issue.

The EU brought in mandatory food labelling in 1997.
