S. African maize forecast is reduced

28-02-2007 | |

South Africa is expected to produce 7.757 million tonnes of maize during the current 2006/07 season, the government said this week.

The crop will consist of 4.659 million tonnes of white maize and 3.098
million tonnes of yellow maize, the Crop Estimates Committee said in its first
official crop forecast.

The total figure was lower than market
expectations. The average forecast of 10 traders polled by Reuters last week was
8.191 million tonnes. Their forecasts were in a range of 7.5-8.65 million
tonnes.
