The 11th survey released last week by Brazil’s National Supply Company, Conab, forecasts growth of 6% in the country’s grain harvest. Meanwhile, the country becomes the world’s largest soybean exporter.

Brazil is gearing up to achieve a historical record of grain production this year (2018/2019 harvest), reaching 241.3 million tonnes, its best result ever. The last record achieved was 237.6 million tonnes in the 2016/2017 harvest.

Year-on-year, total grain production has increased 6%, or 13.7 million tonnes, and planted area is at 63 million hectares, or 2% more than the previous season.

Conab said that Brazil’s second crop corn (called safrinha) saw a record production of 73.1 million tonnes, an increase of 35.6%. The first corn harvest of the season should stand at 26.2 million tonnes, a reduction of 2.1%.

Largest soybean producer

Brazil has confirmed its position as the largest soy exporter in 2018, reaching 56% of global soybean exports, according to the World Trade Organization. The country increased foreign sales of soybeans by 29% in 2018 over the previous year. In the 2018/9 harvest, however, there was a 3.6% reduction in production, totalling 115 million tonnes. Despite this drop, Brazil remains the leader of soybean exports.
