Insect oil in swine nutrition is not as futuristic as it may sound. Global agribusiness company Cargill and InnovaFeed have been working on this concept successfully and talked about it in detail in a recent webinar, that is now available for viewing on demand.
The webinar was hosted by Pig Progress and broadcast on Thursday, June 17, 2021. Speakers Dr Graziano Mantovani and Chloé Phan Van Phi first explained the partnership between the 2 companies in the making insect oil, a useful ingredient for swine production. They also presented case studies.
Dr Graziano Mantovani is strategic marketing and technology lead at Cargill’s Provimi swine business in Western Europe and Chloé Phan Van Phi is the head of marketing and sales at InnovaFeed. Together they gave the audience a complete insight into the world of insect oil. “Both companies are excited about the future,” Dr Mantovani stressed. “Insect oil is just the beginning.”
Sustainability, commercial scalability and performance were 3 key concepts that were emphasised quite often in the webinar. The speakers explained that by using the Black Soldier Fly, and extracting insect oil from the larvae, the environmental footprint drops dramatically with a 0 impact on deforestation.
In terms of performance, the 2 speakers shared the results of a research programme carried out in recent years, when piglets were fed with feed containing insect oil. The research team observed an increased piglet body weight, a better stool quality on day 14 post-weaning and concluded that insect oil could be used to replace plant oils in piglet diets.
Just before the speakers embarked on a long question and answer session, they also explained that pork from pigs fed insect oil has been in stores with French retailer Auchan.
