The ancient grain teff has the potential to be a real superfood for overweight ponies. ABC rural reports on Australian farmers who now sell teff hay bales for this purpose.

When teff is baled into hay it makes a low-sugar, high protein feed that is much sought after by horse owners whose animals have a weight problem.

Ken and Luke Felmingham, owners of Goulburn Valley farm in Australia are now baling their third cut of teff hay this season, a crop they fell into growing. “It was encouraged to us by our buyers in Melbourne, so we gave it a go,” Luke said.

The Felminghams grew about 30 hectares of teff this year on irrigated paddocks at Invergordon, north of Shepparton. Most of this year’s teff crop has been baled into small square hay bales and sold into markets around Melbourne. Demand has been so high for the product that there has been a shortage of teff hay this season.
