Tasmanian grain growers are concerned their product is not included in Tasmania’s $700 million salmon farming industry, ABC rural reports.
Skretting Australia, headquartered in southern Tasmania, produce the majority of the fish feed for the Atlantic salmon farming industry in Australia and were thrown into the national spotlight after Four Corners investigated the key ingredients in salmon feed.
James Rose, managing director of Skretting Australia, said they are not using as much Tasmanian product as they would like. For Tasmanian crops to be used as an ingredient in Skretting’s fish feed, Rose said they would need a consistent supply of 10,000 tonnes of high protein wheat a year.
