Bulgaria considers drought compensation

23-05-2007 | |

An advisory body with Bulgaria’s agriculture ministry will discuss state subsidies for grain producers who are set to lose some of this year’s harvest due to early spring drought.

Grain producers have warned that they could lose as much as BGN 800 million
(€409m) this year because of the dry spring.

Even the torrential rains
that have swept Bulgaria over the past week might not be enough to save the
harvest, officials say.

The producers have threatened nationwide protests
should the size of the compensations fail to meet their
expectations.

Several hundred farmers are set to block roads in the
Sliven and Pleven regions in protest over the cabinet’s slow response.
