FEED MILL: Vestjyllands Andel, Denmark

Many Danish feed companies nowadays apply techniques to create pig feed that is digested slowly and more evenly. Using rolled barley in this process is one of the solutions to reach that goal, Vincent ter Beek, editor for Pig Progress, found out.

  • VA mainly produces feed for the whole pig range from sows to finishers; the VA cooperative aims to produce high quality feed, in 150 different recipes. One of the recipes provided for farmers includes the use of rolled barley for about 15-20%. The principle was introduced by VA about 15 years ago and is provided by most Danish feed millers nowadays

  • The rolled barley is included in the compound feed after heating and pelleting. The feed mill used for this process can be found in the nearby village of Hee, where the feed for sows and piglets is produced. A part of the finisher feeds is also produced here

  • …after which even flat particles come out. Rolling barley means more feed surface becomes available for pig stomachs, hence the process of digestion takes longer. In pig behaviour this translates in earlier saturation. Ideally, thus feed intake is the same but feed consumption is more evenly balanced through the day, which is beneficial for gut health for both sows and finishers as less ulcers appear. The company claims this way E.coli and Salmonella can be controlled

  • Not only by using rolled barley, VA aims to intensify the feed's quality with regard to slow and more regular feed intake. Adding dried alfalfa for instance has this effect as well

  • VA produces 300,000 tonnes of feed/year and has a market share of 7%. About 70% of its feed is bulk production and 30% is compound feed on the basis of farmer's specific recipes. Separate premix products are sold to home mixers. Next to the Ringkøbing plant, there's an additional plant for finisher feed. In addition, organic feeds are being produced here. In a third location, feed for cattle is produced
