Less Brazil beef to Russia in 2009

In 2009, Russia, Brazil's biggest customer will reduce its imports because of the credit crunch, according to Brazil's beef exporters' association (Abiec).

Last year Russia accounted for 40% of Brazil's exports. It is now expected that this number will fall to 20% in 2009, says the president of the Abiec, Roberto Giannetti da Fonseca.

However, more Brazilian beef will be exported to Chile and the EU. Chile could potentially take in about 80,000 tonnes of Brazilian beef this year, and the EU could increase its imports from 100,000 tonnes in 2008 to between 180,000 and 200,000 tonnes.

According to Roberto, Brazil's exports will therefore remain stable in 2009, bringing in US$5.3 billion in revenue for 1.45 million tonnes.
