Canadian Govt. provide financial aid for cattle production

The assistance is being provided under the Support Program for Sectoral Development Strategies, which is associated with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s Agricultural Flexibility Fund, and will be used to implement a project at Notre-Dame-du-Nord, in Abitibi-Témiscamingue.

The purpose of this project is to develop grazing techniques to achieve an average grazing season of over 200 days for all cattle herds. Extending the grazing season will have a positive impact on forage quantity and quality, increase the productivity of existing pastures, thereby generating economic benefits and will ultimately result in lower cow and calf feeding costs.

“We are committed to the prosperity of the agriculture sector, which is a key driver of economic growth and job creation in the region,” said Minister Ritz. “The differences in Canada’s agroclimatic regions pose significant challenges for agricultural producers, and our Government is proud to provide support by helping to make this project a reality.”

“Cattle production is important to Abitibi-Témiscamingue, but the weather is not always on our side,” said Mr. Chapadeau. “This project will help farm businesses in the region improve their competitiveness, a goal that is fully aligned with the objectives of the food sovereignty policy.”

The Support Programme for Sectoral Development Strategies was announced by the governments of Canada and Quebec on March 25, 2011. The four-year, CAD$16.7-million programme provides support for the adaptation and development of the agri-food sector in a competitive and constantly changing business environment.
