Ukraine expects record corn harvest

Ukraine’s 2013 corn crop harvest is expected to reach a record of more than 25 million tonnes, which is 20% higher than last year, according to the Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, Mykola Prysiazhnyuk, at a press conference.

Earlier, the Ministry had predicted that this year’s corn crop will total 22-23 million tonnes. The additional increase in the forecast, according to the report, is due to the fact that during the whole month of July and the beginning of August the country has experienced very favourable weather conditions for cultivation of this type of crop.

According to reports by the Ministry, Ukraine, as of July 23, harvested 23.5 million tonnes of grain, including 17.2 million tonnes of wheat, 5.6 million tonnes of barley and 0.341 million tonnes of rye.

The Ministry of Agrarian Policy forecasts a 2013grain harvest of 53-54 million tonnes compared to 46.2 million tonnes in 2012. According to the State Statistics Service, corn harvest in Ukraine in 2012 amounted to 20.9 million tonnes, which was 8.4% less than in 2011.

At the same time Ministry of Agriculture experts forecast a drop in compound feed production prices due to the good harvest. It is expected that the average price for pig feed in particular may fall 15% already by this autumn.
